Have you always had round nails? Or Square?
I used to have round nails till about 7-8 years ago. Then once a manicurist made them square for me. Thats it I never looked back. Its waay more easy to maintain square nails than round.
At first I used to have trouble filing them square and making sure the edge was a straight line.
Till I read this somewhere that it easy to cut nails with a scissor.
Now it barely take me 5 mins to re-size and re-shape my nails.

If you have round nails I suggest you let them grow out till side edges are straight with the nail bed.
Take a scissor, place the lower end against the tip of your finger, keep it parallel to the nail base line and cut.

| Before Cutting |
After you cut with scissor, this is how your nails will look.
The edges and corners will be really sharp. So here's what you need to do.
Lightly file down at 45 degrees against the edge of the nail. File in one direction, lifting your file back and placing it at the top, not rubbing it up and down. You only need to file lightly, say 3-4 strokes (light) so that the edges of your nail are sealed.
This will help against peeling and cracking from the edges. Dont file the nail down, you want to maintain the straight line formed by the scissor.
Now file at the corners to make them blunt. Again file in one direction for each corner. A few strokes should do it.
And Ta-daaaaaa!
Do you already do this or use another method to make your nails square? I'd like to know.

Oh bless your heart Kejal! I've had oval shaped nails all my life and my attempts at turning them square by filing them down was a maddening slow and time consuming process, this scissors trick is a life saver!! Only thing I wonder is I have pretty strong and hard nails I hope the scisccors are able to cut thru them :P
ReplyDeleteI think u should be able to cut them..try trimming your edges with a scissor to make them square..u'll know if u can cut them easily without breaking them... Ohhh! I hope this works for u!! :)
DeleteKyyah! I can't do this with my nails. They have a lot of curve to them that isn't clipper or scissor-friendly. I just go at them with a lot of patience and a series of files, stroking in one direction.
ReplyDeleteEven I have some nails which are more curved than others..but as long as ur nails are not brittle u shud be able to do this :)
DeleteNice tip Kejal, I prefer to use a toes nail cutter :)
ReplyDeletebut that wud still give u a rounded edge
DeleteNot necessarily. There are clippers that have a straight edge instead of a rounded one. They work perfectly if you want a straight edge:)
Delete:) thanks Ducky! I havent seen straight clippers around here yet..but those wud be equally helpful
DeleteKej u r blessed with broad nails.. m cutting them square for quite a few months now but still thy grow round making lil more thn half moon on the edges . i hope u hv seen tht in my pics ... oh yeah nd hav u checked out i tried to click a pic likes u ... i luv ur photography :)
ReplyDeletedimpal..u'll jus need to trim a bit more often to keep them square.
DeleteI saw I saw :D
hmm i can try tht :)
DeleteGreat tutorial! I never cut my nails, I always file them down. I used to cut them but after it had some problems, my nails started to exfoliate. From then I just file my nails and shape them in square format.
ReplyDeleteFiling is good.. I jus like to find the easy way out :D
DeleteThis puts too much stress on my side walls so i bought one of those clippers they use for false nails as it has one blade cutting down like a guillotine .I do love the square shape:)
ReplyDeleteohh! I m curious what kind of clipper is that?!! O_o
DeleteWish I had long nails to reshape them! I'm hoping they grow whilst I'm on holiday *fingers crossed* xx
ReplyDeleteI hope they grow too!! xoxo
Deletethat was something! i'm gonna try this!
ReplyDelete:) lemme know how it works for u!
DeleteSuper helpful Kej!! Clap! Clap!!!
ReplyDeleteWaise my thumb n index finger nails r automatically oval whereas the other 3 grow square...its damn irritating coz its hard to make oval nails look square...any tips?
zee, keep cutting off the round tips till the sides are straight and they'll look more square than oval.
DeleteI always file, have never cut them and never will because they are to weak. Thy would ship of or break immediately. I file them as straight as I can but yours are way better. A pitty I can't try it.
ReplyDeleteoh! if your nails are brittle it may be better to file off gently. But u know sometimes I feel if you file alot it tends to make nails brittle. maybe u can try to cut with scissors when you still have polish on ur nails. it'll provide some strength to ur nails...and use a nail strengthening base
DeleteGreat post! I really love your blog :)

I would really appreciate if you would check out my facebook page and I'd love to follow you if you do the same for me^^
Thanks! :)
DeleteI do not recommend cutting your nails with scissors! Or taking advice from someone who isn't a trained professional! You'll weaken your nail doing this... leave the cutting to the pros people. Use a file!
ReplyDeleteBut my nails havent chipped or weakened when I do this..infact a metal nail file cause my nails to split!
DeleteA metal nail file will do that, you are correct. You need to use an emery board with a fine grit.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip! Recently I started using a glass file and I find it much better than metal files.. will try the emery one too!
DeleteI make my nails square just by shaping them in a straight line...scissors just dont cut so properly...but nice tutorial :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tip, do I need a special kind of scissors to cut or normal one will do?
